"When DJ Campbell goes to Leicester for £2million – and he’s only played in Birmingham City’s reserves and Brentford’s first team – it’s absolute madness."
The words of Ian Holloway, then manager of Plymouth in August 2007, when he was asked about spiralling transfer fees.
Three months later, Holloway was Campbell’s manager at the Walkers Stadium and fighting a losing battle to keep City in the Championship.
The striker made his name with FA Cup giant-killing exploits for Brentford and it earned him a big move to Birmingham.
When Martin Allen – Campbell’s boss at the Bees – was appointed at the Walkers, he swooped for Campbell in a £2m deal.
Unfortunately, that transfer fee has always overshadowed Campbell’s contribution to the City cause and was further hampered by a pelvic injury which limited his game time to just 22 starts.
He briefly returned to action in the absence of Steve Howard, but then found himself shipped out on loan to Championship side Blackpool.
And he took to the bracing sea air of Bloomfield Road immediately with six goals in his first 14 goals, bemusing City fans who could not understand why he was unable to be as deadly in a lower division.
