Derby County hope to extend loans of Leicester City strikers

Derby County manager Nigel Clough is hoping to extend the loans of Leicester City duo Paul Dickov and DJ Campbell.

The strikers are due to return to the Walkers Stadium after completing their agreed loan spell in the Rams' 0-0 draw at Newcastle United on Monday night. But Clough has said he would like to negotiate an extension and revealed he is close to doing so regarding Campbell.

Clough is also hoping to convince City manager Nigel Pearson to allow Campbell to play in the FA Cup this weekend.

"We are looking forward to the loan market opening on January 1," he said.

"We will look to get some players in even before the FA Cup tie at Millwall because we could potentially lose five players from the 18 on duty against Newcastle with the loans going back and the two suspensions.

"We will be on the phone as a matter of urgency following up the inquiries we have made in the last two or three weeks.

"We're keen to keep DJ and Paul Dickov and we think we have agreed in principle, we hope, to extend DJ's stay initially until the end of January.

"The FA Cup complicates matters slightly because we have to get permission to play him in that."

Pearson may prefer permanent deals for the duo because he has warned he may have to wheel and deal in the transfer window in order to strengthen his squad. The City boss will not have a big transfer kitty to play with and he may choose to trim his squad in order to free up cash for improvements with a defender high up on his wish list.

Meanwhile, City defender Harry Worley has agreed to stay at Crewe Alexandra for the remainder of the season. The 21-year-old has made 12 starts for the Alex since joining in August, having missed three months with an ankle injury.

"He's a young lad, he wants to do well, he's got a good physique and he can play a bit as well," assistant manager Steve Davis told BBC Radio Stoke.

City will wait until after this weekend's FA Cup third-round ties before arranging new dates for the postponed trips to Cardiff City and Doncaster Rovers.

If City and either the Bluebirds or Rovers are knocked out of the Cup, the date for the fourth round could be used for one of the fixtures.
