Frustration for Leicester City fans as Doncaster match is called off

Tuesday, December 29, 2009, 08:00

Leicester City fans were left frustrated by yesterday's postponement at Doncaster Rovers.

More than 1,200 were preparing to head north when the game was called off because of a frozen pitch.

"We were very disappointed," said Cliff Ginnetta, City Supporters' Club chairman.

"We were all geared up to go and then found out it was off just before we started travelling.

"Everyone looks forward to these Christmas fixtures. City are on a roll and we wanted to keep in going. It left us all frustrated."

Doncaster had installed extra covers on their Keepmoat Stadium pitch.

But temperatures sunk to -6C overnight and, after consulting both managers, referee Keith Woolmer ruled out play.

Doncaster do not have undersoil heating. Even so, Ginnetta said: "Leicester Tigers don't have undersoil heating but still manage to play."

City would have been looking forward to clash after back-to-back wins over the two Sheffield clubs, Wednesday and United.

On the plus side, it does give them an extra few days to get regular first-teamers Wayne Brown, Jack Hobbs and Bruno Berner back to match fitness after injuries for the FA Cup third-round tie with Swansea at the Walkers Stadium on Saturday.

Ginnetta is delighted with City's progress, which has seen them make the play-off positions.

"We made the step up from last season and have done really well," he said.

"Our manner of play has been good because we go out to win every game. We don't try to stifle the opposition.

"So far, there haven't been as many changes as people thought, but I'm sure Nigel Pearson will be looking to improve the squad in the January transfer window. I will be surprised if they don't bring in anyone.

"Given the progress we have made, I will be disappointed if we didn't get into the play-offs come May. Even with the injury problems we had against Sheffield United, our young players, people like Michael Morrison, proved their worth, and I'm sure we can finish in the top six."
