Leicester City on a high for FA Cup tie against Swansea – Richie Wellens
Wellens felt the disappointment of the postponement of yesterday's Championship match at Doncaster more keenly than most.
The 29-year-old was set to make an emotional return to his former club but that was ruled out by a severe overnight frost.
Wellens's focus of attention will now switch to Saturday's FA Cup third-round tie against Championship rivals Swansea City at the Walkers Stadium. "We can go into the game on a high after the way the last couple of games have gone," said Wellens.
"We're going to try to enjoy the game because FA Cup third-round day is always a special date on the calendar and it should be a good atmosphere."
Yesterday was the second time in 10 days City have had an away trip postponed, their scheduled fixture at Cardiff having suffered the same fate.
The postponement also cost City a place in the table because they slipped to fifth as Cardiff moved above them with a 4-4 draw at Peterborough. But the delay may work in City's favour.
Manager Nigel Pearson had selection problems ahead of yesterday's clash with Wayne Brown, Bruno Berner, Jack Hobbs and Aleksandar Tunchev on the injured list.
However, Wellens was impressed with Ryan McGivern in an emergency centre-back role when both Hobbs and Berner, his intended replacement, failed to appear for the second half of Saturday's 2-1 win over Sheffield United.
The Manchester City loanee filled in alongside goal-scorer Michael Morrison.
Wellens said: "Hobbsy was a big miss for us because he wins a lot of first ball and we struggled with that.
"Ryan had a couple of scares early on, but he did well in there against the likes of Richard Cresswell, Henri Camara and Ched Evans, who are all good players."
Wellens said the victory against the Blades was also a good example of the team's fighting spirit.
"Losing Jack and Bruno and then with them scoring after 46 minutes wobbled us a bit, but we showed character and ground out the result," he said.
"Sheffield United are a big club and a lot of their lads have played in the Premier League.
"It's important to keep them away from us because, if you can gain a decent points advantage on any of your rivals at this stage of the season, it is a good thing.
"We're the size of club that should be up there and we need to be looking to be in the mix.
"If we can keep free of injuries and suspensions, and maybe add to the squad, we've got every chance."
