Leicester City Stand Point by David Bevan: Fine win but some concerns

Wednesday, February 24, 2010, 08:00

As the Leicester City fans filed out of the Keepmoat Stadium, everyone seemed to be saying the same thing. If we play like that on Saturday, it will not be pretty.

Nevertheless, Martyn Waghorn's neat first-half finish was enough to see off Doncaster and ensure that one more game played equalled three more precious points.

Usually, winning is enough. Everyone goes home happy.

This windswept, snowy evening in South Yorkshire was quite worrying, though.

City dominated for the first half-hour and looked far more like the home team than Sean O'Driscoll's men. The bright play of Nolberto Solano and Lloyd Dyer, in particular, deserved a goal which duly arrived when Waghorn struck to set the away end wild.

The concerning aspect came after the interval when City continually sat back inviting pressure from Rovers.

A better side would have put us to the sword.

Thankfully, Doncaster were even less clinical than us and failed to really test Chris Weale.

If we are going to challenge the teams above us, including a certain visiting side on Saturday, we need to come up with a few answers.

We are doing brilliantly in the league table, but let's try to iron out these little flaws which could make us even better.

For instance, when one of our midfielders has the ball in space, they should not be playing it back to Wayne Brown.

The stand-in City skipper is a rock at the back and defends our goal with his life.

All of that is great, but many City fans seem to feel that he is not a great passer of the ball.

Secondly, Nigel Pearson is going to have to sort out what he wants from our goal-kicks.

It may seem like a minor problem but we are constantly giving the ball back to the opposition from nearly every Weale clearance.

If there is no target-man on the pitch, as happened when Dany N'Guessan was substituted at the Keepmoat, surely it is worth trying to play the ball out from the back?

Nevertheless, this was a vitally important win which gives City a psychological boost ahead of Saturday.
