Goal-shy Leicester City skipper Matt Oakley aims to break his duck
The Leicester City skipper went agonisingly close at Bristol City on Tuesday, a second-half shot hitting a post, so nothing would give him more pleasure than to hit the elusive target at Home Park.
"I'm getting a bit of stick at the minute because I haven't scored this season so, hopefully, one will go in soon," said Oakley.
"It wasn't to be at Bristol. I thought I'd done everything right but the spin took the ball on to the post and it came back into the keeper's arms.
"It is just one of those things and, hopefully the next one will go in and then they will come along like buses."
Oakley's last City goal came in April against Hereford. Scoring at Plymouth will be something of an achievement because it has not been the kindest of venues for the midfielder.
"I've struggled a bit there, when I was with Derby and Southampton," he said.
"Plymouth make things very difficult for you and I gather the pitch is not in a good state at the moment.
"They have hit a little bit of form over the past week, drawing with Swansea and getting a good result on the road at Barnsley, so it is going to be tough."
Instead of the 240-mile trek to Plymouth by road, City will be flying down to Plymouth on Saturday morning.
Oakley believes it can only be beneficial, and said: "It will give us more time to relax tomorrow and will certainly reduce the leg-work in terms of travel.
"Hopefully, the board will be happy they made the decision to fly us down."
Oakley is pleased with City's recent performances.
"We are playing some good football," he said. "We have changed our shape slightly, which seems to suit the players we have got, and worked on it in training.
"We've have got good pace and power out wide with Lloyd Dyer and Paul Gallagher.
"We are creating chances, which is good. With Matty Fryatt missing, we need to step up and score some goals."
It is a crucial period of the season for City and Oakley admits that so many away games in a short space of time can be tough.
"It can be draining," he said. "But we've got a good squad and, if we can stay fresh, we will be fine.
"We haven't spoken about targets for this run of games, we look at performances, where we went wrong and what we did well.
"But I think we can win the next couple of games. We are in good form, we're not getting beaten and our confidence is high."
Looking ahead to Doncaster on Tuesday, Oakley is expecting a completely different game to the frustrating 0-0 draw between the teams at the Walkers Stadium earlier this month.
"We were disappointed with that game, but at least we didn't get beaten," said Oakley.
"Doncaster came for a point that night but we know they are a stronger team at home than they are away.
"They had a very good result against Nottingham Forest last weekend so it shows they can be dangerous.
"There are so many games coming up now but we are sitting in a good position and have a couple of games in hand on some of the teams around us.
"If we can turn them into victories then we can be in those play-off places at the end of the season."
