Lloyd Dyer to rescue for Leicester City in dramatic finale at Bristol City

Lloyd Dyer rescued a point for Leicester City with a dramatic added-time equaliser at Ashton Gate.

City looked to be heading to a bitter defeat when David Clarkson fired home what seemed to be the winner in the first minute of added time.

However, in a barn-storming finish, Dyer popped up with a superb finish into the bottom corner to give City a share of the spoils.

City should have taken all three points as they again created some superb chances but poor finishing and bad luck seemed to deny them.

Not surprisingly after their emphatic victory over Scunthorpe on Saturday, Nigel Pearson named an unchanged side for the first time since the end of November.

The only change was on the substitutes' bench, where Nicky Adams, who has returned to City after a successful loan spell at Leyton Orient, replaced on-loan defender Alex Bruce.

The Robins played an integral role in City's darkest period of the season when they won 3-1 at the Walkers Stadium to inflict more pain on a City side that had just been walloped 5-1 by Nottingham Forest.

How fortunes have changed since then. City recovered and went into last night's game having picked up seven points from the last nine, and nicely placed in the play-off places.

In contrast, Gary Johnson's men had won once in 12 attempts since their victory at Leicester and, having been play-off challengers in the last couple of seasons, they were looking over their shoulder at the wrong end of the table.

City certainly started like a side with their tails up and they could have taken the lead after just 38 seconds when Dyer picked out Martyn Waghorn's run behind the Robins defence.

The City striker beat goalkeeper Dean Gerken to the ball but his touch took him wide and Lewin Nyatanga was able to get in a good block.

But the danger was not over for the hosts because, from the corner, Matt Oakley had a goal-bound attempt blocked at the back post.

Bristol had a few bright moments and Louis Carey wasted their best chance after 13 minutes when he volleyed over the bar from close range after being picked out by Lee Johnson's free-kick.

Besides that, it was City – and, in particular, Paul Gallagher – who looked by far the more likely to break the deadlock.

The City striker scored the first hat-trick of his career on Saturday and he could have had the match-ball in his bag again by half-time.

He went close with two free-kicks.

The first was fumbled around the post by Gerken and the second flew inches wide of the post.

Gallagher also wasted the best chance 10 minutes before half-time when Richie Wellens found him unmarked with a great cross but Gallagher could only direct his header straight at Gerken.

Dyer also looked lively in the first half and almost rounded off the best move of the half after a mazy run and one-two with Wellens, but his touch let him down at the vital moment.

As they did last Saturday, City started the second half slowly and the hosts almost took the lead when Danny Haynes played a clever one-two with Clarkson and lifted his shot over Chris Weale but, luckily for City, the ball nestled into the side-netting.

City responded and Bruno Berner missed a great chance five minutes later when Andy King picked him out with a teasing cross to the far corner after a clever run from Waghorn.

But the Swiss full-back mis-kicked and the chance went begging again.

Waghorn went close to a spectacular strike on the hour after a superb team move and cross from Morrison, but his acrobatic scissor-kick went wide.

City were now rampant with some stunning passing moves and they dissected the home defence again two minutes later.

Oakley was played in by Waghorn and his attempt beat the keeper but not the bottom of a post.

To add to his misfortune, the rebound landed conveniently in the arms of Gerken.

The hosts rallied after their good fortune and applied some pressure with Haynes firing a superb curling shot inches wide.

But it was only a temporary pause in the City attacks and Dyer went close after another clever run and shot.

City had a great chance with 13 minutes remaining when City struggled to clear a Nicky Maynard cross and Clarkson hacked his shot wide from close range.

Then Weale produced a good save to deny Clarkson again after good play from substitute Ivan Sproule.

The game was now wide open and City could have nicked it when Dyer played a great one-two with Wellens and pulled the ball back for King but he fired just wide.

But it was third time lucky for Clarkson in the first minute of added-time when he turned sharply and fired home what looked to be the winner into the bottom corner.

However, within a minute, Morrison picked out Dyer and he fired home an equaliser into the bottom corner from the edge of the area to give City a deserved point.
