Michael Morrison had the distinction of being Nigel Pearson’s first signing, and he fit the criteria of being young and with a hunger to succeed.
He also had an impressive pre-season which earned him a place in the starting line-up for the opening day League One fixture against MK Dons.
Morrison’s chosen position was a pretty hot property for much of the League One campaign, but he has equipped himself well.
He faced competition from Bulgarian international Aleksandar Tunchev, on-loan Liverpool centre-back Jack Hobbs, returning regular Patrick Kisnorbo and Wayne Brown, another loanee.
He has developed a particularly good understanding with Hobbs in a young back-four also containing Kerrea Gilbert and Joe Mattock.
City boasted one of the meanest defences in League One.
Morrison joined Cambridge United as a trainee and played more than 100 games for them in the Blue Square Conference.
He made his debut for the reserves at the age of just 15 – the youngest-ever United player to do so. He was twice named young player of the year at the Abbey Stadium.
