Derby County discuss loan deal for Leicester City's DJ Campbell

Wednesday, November 25, 2009, 00:08

Derby County manager Nigel Clough has confirmed he has made an enquiry about Leicester City striker DJ Campbell.

The Rams boss is attempting to take Campbell to Pride Park on loan and is now waiting on a decision from City boss Nigel Pearson.

Clough wants to add pace to his attack and Campbell tops his list of targets.

Other clubs are believed to be interested in the 27-year-old but the Rams have made an official enquiry which is being considered, sources in Derby have said.

The window for loan signings closes tomorrow and Pearson has not ruled out making changes to his squad.

However, Pearson said he was happy with the balance of his squad and had no immediate plans to make any short-term additions.

The recent injuries to Matt Oakley and Andy King temporarily raised the issue of strengthening Pearson's options in the centre of midfield, but neither injury was as serious as first thought.

Pearson knows a spate of injuries or suspensions could force him to scour the loan market, and he admits looking for potential recruits is a continuing process.

"We are always looking to strengthen the squad, but the criteria for whether you can or you can't is a bit more complex than just saying you like that player and off we go," Pearson explained. "At the moment, we have competition for places, which is healthy.

"It is striking the balance between the right number or too many, or being too short, and that can change very quickly with suspensions and injuries.

"There are no immediate plans, but that is not to say we are not always on the look-out.

"You always have to have an eye on the next move, but I don't go public on that type of information and I don't intend to do that now.

"I am pleased with the squad and how it is developing, and I am pleased with how the players are applying themselves.

"We are not doing too badly at the moment but things can change very quickly in football."

One piece of speculation that seems unlikely is a loan move for Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann.

Pearson was said by one national newspaper to be lining up the American shot-stopper should Tottenham Hotspur follow up their reported interest in Chris Weale, but a source at Molineux has dismissed the link.

Hahnemann is currently Wolves' only back-up for number one Wayne Hennessey as Matt Murray is injured and Carl Ikeme is on loan at Charlton Athletic, and Mick McCarthy would be reluctant to let him go.

Meanwhile, City have already sold out their allocation of 1,600 tickets for Saturday's trip to Scunthorpe United and have been given 500 extra.
