Leicester City and Leicester Tigers face Boxing Day clash
Both clubs are scheduled to play home games on Saturday, December 26, but safety chiefs insist they cannot play on the same day.
The clubs held preliminary discussions yesterday and assessed the implications of the clash. City are at home to Sheffield United at the Walkers Stadium while Tigers host Sale at Welford Road.
City secretary Andrew Neville said: "We're on the case and we've indicated that we don't want to move the Sheffield United game.
"It's traditionally one of our best-attended fixtures and we've also made Tigers aware that we are at Doncaster on the Monday night, so putting back our fixture 24 hours is not an option. We've got a good relationship with Tigers and I'm sure we can come to a mutual agreement."
The last time City were in Boxing Day action at home was in 2007 when the game with Ipswich attracted a crowd of more than 24,000 which was one of the biggest of their entire Championship campaign.
There is also a potential clash the following month, with City at home to Ipswich on January 9 and Tigers scheduled to entertain Wasps.
Tigers managing director David Clayton said: "The important thing is that we try to work together and acknowledge the interests of both clubs.
"We will also try and minimise the disruption to the fans of both clubs.''
City and Tigers are also waiting for television companies to outline their plans for the Christmas period, which could take the matter out of the hands of the clubs.
Meanwhile, City report back for training tomorrow with recent signings Robbie Neilson, Chris Weale and Dany N'Guessan meeting up with their new team-mates for the first time.
City striker DJ Campbell is also due back – although his future at the club is clouded in uncertainty. Campbell is under contract until 2011 but, following a successful loan period at Blackpool, he said that the last thing he wanted to do was to return to Leicester.
City chief executive Lee Hoos said: "His contract is here and it's up to me, Nigel Pearson and DJ to sort something out."
A permanent move to Blackpool now appears to be dead in the water because Campbell is unwilling to accept the wages offered by manager Ian Holloway.
Holloway said: "We have tried to sign DJ Campbell but his agent has made it totally clear that he isn't going to take a drop from the money he is on."
City striker Elliott Chamberlain is in the Wales squad for the Four Nations under-17 tournament in Sweden from July 11-19. Team-mate Lee McArdle, a defender, is on stand-by for the competition which includes the host nation, Norway and Iceland.
