Martyn Waghorn makes ideal goal-scoring debut for Leicester City

New boy Martyn Waghorn says a goal-scoring debut in Leicester City's 2-1 win over Swansea on Saturday has immediately lifted the gloom of his loan spell at troubled Charlton Athletic last season.

The 19-year-old Sunderland striker spent three months at The Valley in a campaign which ended with the Addicks slipping into League One.

And he said the contrast with his arrival at City on a six-month loan deal could not have been greater.

He said: "I've come to a club with a winning mentality whereas last season at Charlton we couldn't get out of losing.

"It's such a massive contrast because here everyone is on a high. We came back and won the game in front of our home fans and that's left everyone buzzing.

"There's a great feel around the club and we have won the first game which is so important."

Waghorn was introduced as a second-half substitute in place of Matty Fryatt, who is still short of match fitness after missing nearly all of the pre-season action with complications following a hernia operation.

Waghorn said: "I think in the first half everyone was tentative. We all wanted to impress and we certainly didn't want to lose the game. But the lads picked their chins up in the second half and worked hard to get the result."

And Waghorn says scoring was the perfect finish to a whirlwind arrival at the Walkers Stadium once his parent club had completed the signing of Darren Bent from Tottenham.

He added: "I arrived last Tuesday night, had a medical on the Wednesday, trained on Thursday and Friday and then played on Saturday and scored so that's all right isn't it?"

His equaliser after 68 minutes owed a lot to a deflection off Swansea defender Angel Rangel. Waghorn said: "I played the ball off him and that sent the goalkeeper the wrong way."

But his overall contribution earned him an excellent ovation from the home fans.

He linked up in attack with Steve Howard and Dany N'Guessan and he was impressed with the contribution of both of them, particularly N'Guessan, who scored City's winner three minutes after his own strike.

He said: "Dany is a good player who is very quick and skilful and he showed he can finish. He also had a couple of good chances.

"But it's going to be a case of everyone contributing and working together to get the results."
