Milan Mandaric will still target big names for Leicester City
The City chairman finally gave up on the Dutch international on Friday after nearly two weeks of talks.
But Mandaric has said that, although the Davids deal did not happen, it does not mean the next one will fall through.
"If another target shows up, and it seems to be the right thing to do for the club, we will approach it," he said. "We have not been put off by what has happened."
Mandaric set Davids' representatives three deadlines last week to try to bring a quick resolution to the club's interest in the 36-year-old former Juventus and Tottenham player.
The first one passed over the weekend of October 24 and 25 before a decision-day of last Wed nesday was extended to last Friday.
Mandaric set a noon deadline but ran out of patience with Davids' advisors and announced City were pulling out of the race an hour early.
He said: "It was unfair to let it drag on any longer. We had a lot of serious issues ahead with the match at QPR the same night and a game against West Brom this weekend, so we didn't want the Davids thing to become too much of a distraction."
Mandaric discussed City's stance with manager Nigel Pearson and added: "Nigel is a level-headed guy and very stable and he understood the situation.
"I thought the deal we made was very acceptable and I was optimistic.
"But we also have a certain policy in terms of wages and I didn't want to go out and spoil other players' contracts."
