It doesn't get any bigger than this for Leicester City – Andy King
Fifth-placed City face sixth-placed Bluebirds at the Walkers Stadium (3.0), and King said the outcome of today's game could be crucial in the race for the play-offs.
City are just two points above Dave Jones' side, who they face again on Tuesday, March 30, and King believes a City victory would lay down a benchmark for their trip to South Wales.
The Wales international also revealed City would be keen for revenge after Cardiff dumped Leicester out of the FA Cup with two late strikes in January.
"We are fifth, Cardiff City are sixth and we play them twice; it could scarcely get any bigger than that," said King, who is friends with several of the Cardiff side.
"There are six points up for grabs – and that's a huge amount at this stage.
"We played Cardiff in the FA Cup at their place and lost 4-2, but we'll take that if we come out on top over the two league games. We owe them one after our cup defeat – and that will help us.
"There are still six, seven or eight teams battling for four play-off places. It's going to be tough, but both Cardiff and ourselves are still in the shake-up.
"Leicester came up from League One last season and everybody around the area is buzzing because we have got into the top six and have a decent shot at staying there.
"Our confidence is high, but we also know a lot of hard work is needed."
Although they were not at their best last week when losing 2-0 at Sheffield Wednesday, City's midfield was a key component in their previous eight game unbeaten run and King said he was delighted with the way the trio of himself, Richie Wellens and captain Matt Oakley had been gelling.
"Richie and Oaksy are great players and as a three we like to rotate around. There aren't any specific roles in there," he said.
"We rotate and play how we see fit during the game. We fill spaces and play almost off the cuff a little bit. That is why it is working well.
"The rotation is pulling the other sides out of position and it is making holes for people like Lloyd Dyer, Martyn Waghorn, Paul Gallagher and Dany N'Guessan.
"I think the whole system is working well and it is one of the main reasons why we have had a pick up in form recently.
"There were options on the ball with the last system but I feel there are even more with this one. With this one there are more forward options, and with Matt playing in behind Waggy there are always options there.
"And whoever plays wide there are options there too, because there is natural width. If we can keep that going, there are always options."
