It was an honour to be Leicester City captain, says Wayne Brown

Wayne Brown has said he was honoured to lead out Leicester City as captain on Saturday.

The 32-year-old was handed the captain's armband against Plymouth Argyle while regular skipper Matt Oakley served a one-game suspension, and Brown said he relished the responsibility.

However, the Barking-born defender said he will happily relinquish the role to Oakley when he returns for this Saturday's trip to Scunthorpe United.

He added that City need very little on-field guidance because they have so many natural leaders in the team.

"It is a great honour to captain a team like Leicester City," said Brown. "It is always a nice honour to captain any team, especially a club of this stature.

"It is a responsibility that I enjoy and it is a responsibility I have had many times in my career.

"I have kept the captaincy warm for Oaksy. Now it is his turn to come back in this weekend and take over the responsibility. All the lads are fully behind him and that is what counts.

"My ambition every game is to go out there and be the best man on the pitch. You have to bring your A game to the table, whether you have an armband on or not.

"I think if you look across the team there are a lot of contenders to take the armband, because we have a lot of great characters.

"They lead by example, and that goes for the youngsters as well as the experienced professionals.

"They come here every week and want to put on a good show for themselves first and foremost, because they want to do the best they can for themselves, but they also put a shift in for the team and their team-mates. That is probably why we are where we are."

Brown credited that character for the fact City kept going until the 94th minute to secure the victory over the Pilgrims.

City dominated proceedings against Paul Sturrock's side but were unable to force a breakthrough until Andy King popped up with a winner in the last minute of added time.

"Some games it is 0-0 at home and you are on tenterhooks a bit because you think they might nick something and we will come away with nothing, but I thought we weren't in any danger whatsoever," said Brown.

"I felt very comfortable and credit the team for restricting Plymouth to one or two shots.

"Credit the lads. They kept going, showed a lot of character and they kept believing, which was very important.

"They didn't get disheartened and I think we got our just rewards.

"Plymouth will say they were unlucky not to get a draw, but for me they only came here for one reason, and that was to get a draw, not to win the game.

"There was only one team trying to win the game and that was us. Thankfully we got the goal.

"It is not ideal scoring in the 94th minute but I don't care whether it is the first or the 94th minute, as long as we win games. A win is a win.

"We have got another three points on the board and we can take a lot of positives out of this game into the game against Scunthorpe."
