Sky is the limit for City

Friday, March 05, 2010, 14:23

Watch out for some fun on Sky Sports Soccer AM over the next couple of weeks, which could have a big Leicester City theme.

The Sky cameras were down Belvoir Drive on Thursday to film Nigel Pearson’s squad having a go at the crossbar challenge, with some hilarious results.

I cannot divulge if one of City’s squad managed to rattle the woodwork, but I can reveal Martyn Waghorn did scare some birds nesting in the trees some 20 yards wide of the target.

It was all good fun and a good release from the pressure of the play-off push, and I could hear the banter of the players from the moment I pulled up in the car park.

Footage of their efforts could be screened on next week’s show.

However, tomorrow the player of the month award is announced on the show and Paul Gallagher is hotly tipped to get the Championship prize. He is up against Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll, Reading’s Simon Church and Swansea City goalkeeper Darius De Vries.

Later on Sky, on Soccer Saturday, the manager of the month award is also announced and again Nigel Pearson is the overwhelming favourite for the Championship award.

Just why they announce these awards at these times is a bit of a mystery because there impact is lost on a match day. Within a few hours, and in the case of the managers’ award a few minutes, the games all kick off and everyone’s focus is elsewhere.

Talk about your 15 minutes of fame, if Pearson wins tomorrow, and I strongly suspect he will, he will barely get 15 seconds.

Then again, that is probably just how Nigel will like it. After all, the winner of the January award was Sheffield Wednesday’s Alan Irvine.

It has not been such a good February for him, has it?
