Transfer day tedium
The transfer window final day was given the usual big build-up by Sky TV but it was like going to a gig, sitting through the support act and then having the house lights come up. There was no main event.
It wasn’t just City who didn’t do much business, in fact very clubs did, which all made a day of transfer watch seem about as interesting as the Parliament Channel.
From what I can gather, the lack of movement into City hasn’t been for the want of trying on Nigel Pearson’s and his staff’s part and there were moves to bring players in but they fell through for one reason or another.
I read and saw some interviews with football agents who explained the diverse nature of the various elements that can make or break a player deal.
For example, one agent said a player had pulled out of a move to England in the past because he didn’t want to put his dog in quarantine, another said a player’s wife had demanded horses as part of a deal.
I bet there are more examples of the bizarre nature of transfer negotiations. It certainly isn’t a simple of case of a club just agreeing a deal with another club, end of story.
It may be frustrating for the fans but at least City weren’t alone in struggling to get players in.
The best deals are done in the summer anyway and that is the best time to assess a club’s ambition.
