It could be a classic
It couldn’t have a better back story. City need a result against the top of the table side and will give a debut to Nobby Solano against his former club. Is it written that Solano will have a match-defining role to play? It has happened before.
Add to the mix the fact that as of yesterday over 27,000 tickets had been sold and there will be millions watching in tv, it is certainly not going to be a routine fixture.
It remains to be seen whether Solano will start. He is fit but hasn’t trained fully or played now since mid-December, so it may be a lot to ask a 35-year-old to play the full 90 minutes. However, I fancy that he will start and then be replaced when he tires.
It may be too soon for Bruno Berner. The left back has been missed during his five-week absence but he has returned to training. Whether it is too soon to throw him back in and whether City want to take the risk is uncertain.
Chris Powell did well on Tuesday night but can we really expect a 40-year-old to play two full 90 minutes in a week?
That would leave Ryan McGivern and if he does play I hope the City fans get behind the 19-year-old because he could do with a boost from the fans.
Another big selection question is who will start in attack? Will it be Kermorgant and Waghorn again, or having said it was time to go back to basics, will Nigel Pearson return to the tried and tested duo of Howard and Fryatt?
The team-sheet will be almost as intriguing as the game itself.
