The disaster of Pompey
The news today that Portsmouth have become the first Premier League club to go into administration has been making all the headlines and while I have every sympathy with the Pompey fans, I have none for the people who run the club.
Fratton Park is a ground I have always enjoyed going to because while the crowds aren’t the biggest, they are amongst the noisiest in the country. There is always a great atmosphere at Pompey.
However, I believe the chickens are coming home to roost for the way the club has been run. Pompey have been paying some astronomical wages in recent seasons and just how was that ever sustainable on the gates they are capable of at Fratton Park?
Hopefully, the club’s demise will act as a warning to the rest of the Premier League clubs who have been building up some astronomical debts, but somehow I believe the lessons will not be learned.
I fear Pompey will be the first of many clubs that will suffer financial disaster in the coming seasons, and above all it is the fans who end up paying the price.
It is a situation I know City fans are all too familiar with and I know we all don’t want to see it happen again.
